Making financial planning accessible for Singaporean households

Professional Background

14 Years in Financial Planning and Education

Melissa’s career in financial advisory didn’t start with a passion for spreadsheets. It started with frustration. After spending nearly a decade working directly with individual clients at a major Singapore financial institution, she saw the same pattern repeatedly: smart, hardworking Singaporeans felt completely overwhelmed by CPF rules, emergency fund targets, and household budgeting decisions.

She’d watch clients struggle with basic questions like “How much should I actually set aside for emergencies?” or “Am I maximizing my CPF contributions correctly?” These weren’t complicated questions — they just weren’t being answered clearly anywhere. So in 2019, she made the deliberate shift away from individual advisory work toward educational content creation, believing she could reach far more people by making financial planning genuinely understandable.

That year, she spearheaded a financial literacy initiative across five Housing and Development Board communities. It reached over 50,000 residents. Not through fancy marketing — just through clear, practical information grounded in Singapore’s actual regulatory environment.

Today, Melissa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore and is a certified financial planner with the Financial Planning Association of Singapore. But her real credential is this: she’s spent years translating technical MAS guidelines into language that actual people understand.

Core Specializations

What Melissa Teaches

Practical financial fundamentals tailored to Singapore’s regulatory framework and household economics

Household Budgeting

Moving beyond generic budget templates to build spending plans that actually reflect how Singaporean households work — from HDB mortgages to utilities to childcare costs.

CPF Optimization

CPF rules change regularly, and most people don’t understand how contributions work across Ordinary Account, Special Account, and Medisave. Melissa breaks it down so you’re not leaving money on the table.

Emergency Fund Strategy

MAS guidelines say you should have 3-6 months of expenses saved. But what does that actually mean for your household? How do you build it without sacrificing other financial goals?

Long-Term Goal Setting

Retirement planning, education savings for kids, home upgrades — these aren’t separate goals. They’re interconnected. Melissa helps you map them together within Singapore’s financial landscape.

Teaching Philosophy

No Shortcuts. No Jargon. No Shame.

“Sound financial planning shouldn’t require expensive advisors. It requires clear, accessible information grounded in Singapore’s unique regulatory environment.”

— Melissa Tan

Technical Accuracy Meets Real Life

Every article reflects the latest updates in Singapore’s financial regulations and MAS policy changes. But it’s not written for accountants — it’s written for you, managing your household finances on a typical weeknight.

Focus on Middle-Income Households

She’s particularly committed to helping households in the $4,000–$8,000 monthly income range. That’s where the biggest gaps exist, and that’s where clear guidance makes the most difference.

Relatable Storytelling

Concepts like CPF contribution limits and emergency fund calculations become genuinely understandable when they’re tied to real situations. Not intimidating. Not theoretical. Real.
